Stowaways

Around the World, stowaways in large numbers continue to find their way on board ships. Where in the past the phenomenon was limited to the poorer regions of the World, today stowaways can occur also in more industrialized countries, typically in the shape of illegal migrants on the run from authorities. Stowaways can cause long delays and eventually cost the affected shipowners a lot of money. Although the cost is typically covered by the shipowners’ Protection & Indemnity insurance (the P&I Club), this is a mutual insurance where shipowners end up footing the bill anyway. Furthermore, having stowaways on board is a great discomfort to the crew and instances are many where stowaways have become a security risk as well. Therefore, there is every reason to follow the guidance below on how to protect the vessel against stowaways.
